Fishing the Kenai and Soldotna Area Lakes

A pretty arctic char

The Kenai Peninsula, known for its dramatic glacial blue rivers and vast wilderness is also home to a hidden network of smaller lakes that are perfect for anglers seeking a more peaceful fishing experience. While these smaller bodies of water are usually overlooked in the presence of our more famous rivers, the fishing on the lakes in the Kenai and Soldotna area can be world class. Many are stocked regularly by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) and the fishing on these lakes offers a tranquil fishing experience. In these lakes you can expect to find species including rainbow trout, arctic char, landlocked salmon and grayling.

When is the best time for fishing on the Kenai and Soldotna Lakes?

The fishing on the local lakes is best during the cold water months (October-Mid June, with May and June being peak season.) Because the bulk of the sockeye salmon run doesn’t begin to arrive until mid June, the Kenai and Soldotna area lakes offer a perfect fishing alternative to King salmon fishing for the angler arriving early in the season. These budget friendly, laid-back but action packed private guided trips are a hit with beginner and experienced anglers alike. They are a wonderful experience for families with younger children who might not get the full experience out of a salmon fishing charter. One of the great add-ons to our lake fishing trips is the option for a shore-lunch  of fresh fish cooked over a campfire or camp stove on a secluded section of an Alaskan lake.

How do your guided trips on the Lakes work ?

We will start our day by meeting you at the boat landing on the lake of choice. We can cater to your preferences (species/size/numbers, etc) by taking you to a variety of different lakes in the area. Typically we will choose to use our drift boats when fishing the local lakes so that we can stealthily row you around the lake. Rowing greatly increases your chances of seeing wildlife as well as catching the larger trout can be more wary. We usually fish using light tackle techniques including trolling, casting, drifting or fly fishing. The average size of our trout and char in the Soldotna and Kenai area lakes is between 12″-20″ long, but fish up to 28″ or more and over 8 pounds inhabit some of the lakes we fish. If you get lucky enough to hook one of these bigger fish hold on and let the drag on the reel do the work because the ultra-light tackle and lighter line necessary to fool these bigger fish makes for one heck of a fight. If you choose to add the shore-lunch option into your trip we will stop to spend the last hour or so of the day in a more secluded section of lake to make a small campfire or prepare your catch over a camp stove.
