September Fishing on the Kenai River: A Guide’s Perspective
September is one of my favorite months to fish the Kenai River. As the summer crowds thin out and the leaves begin to change, the river transforms into a peaceful and picturesque setting. The fishing remains excellent, with large second-run silver salmon arriving everyday and the best trout fishing of the year. Dropping water exposes shallow gravel bars, making new pockets and eddies to fish. Add in the incredible wildlife sightings, and September offers an unforgettable experience on the Kenai.
Silver Salmon: Big, Aggressive, and Plentiful
By September, the second run of silver salmon (coho) is in full swing. These fish are larger than their early-run counterparts and fight aggressively when hooked. Whether you prefer casting spinners, drifting bait, or stripping flies, silver salmon provide exciting action and are fantastic table fare. The cooler temperatures and lower angling pressure make September an ideal time to target silvers on the Kenai River.
Exceptional Trout Fishing
September also offers some of the best trout fishing of the season. As salmon finish spawning, the river is full of drifting eggs and flesh, creating a feeding frenzy for rainbow trout and Dolly Varden. On even-numbered years, pink salmon carcasses provide an extra food source, leading to some of the fattest, most aggressive trout of the year. Whether using beads to imitate salmon eggs or drifting flesh flies, targeting these gorging, trophy-sized fish in September is an incredible experience. For the fly angler hoping to hook the trout of a lifetime, I always recommend practicing your casting before coming to Alaska, and being familiar with how to fight a big fish on the reel, utilizing the drag to fight the fish. Kenai River rainbows are known for their blistering fast runs, acrobatic jumps and are masters at escape. Hooking a trophy 30 plus inch rainbow is a challenge, but getting one into the net is a whole separate challenge.
Breathtaking Fall Colors and Wildlife Encounters
One of the most overlooked aspects of fishing in September is the natural beauty and abundant wildlife. The riverbanks glow with brilliant shades of gold and orange, providing a stunning backdrop to a day on the water. Wildlife is also more active, with frequent sightings of moose, caribou, and bears along the shorelines. Seals and even beluga whales can be spotted following the salmon runs into the river, adding to the uniqueness of the experience.
A More Relaxed Fishing Experience
By September, many local anglers have wrapped up their fishing for the season, leading to a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere on the river. With fewer boats and anglers, it’s easier to access prime fishing spots and enjoy the serenity of the Kenai River. For those looking for a less crowded and productive fishing trip, September is hard to beat.
