Kenai River Fishing Guide FAQ

Some frequently asked Kenai River. questions and their answers.

Everything You Need to Know Before Your Alaska Fishing Trip

Planning a guided fishing trip in Alaska can bring up a lot of questions — especially if it’s your first time fishing the legendary Kenai River. Below you’ll find answers to the most common questions we get from guests booking Alaska fishing charters and Kenai River salmon fishing trips.

What do I need to bring on a Kenai River fishing trip?

We recommend bringing:

  • Weather-appropriate clothing
  • Rain gear and an extra warm layer
  • Snacks and drinks
  • Sunglasses
  • A valid Alaska fishing license

We provide everything else you need, including rods, reels, tackle, bait, and safety equipment. Our goal is to make your guided fishing trip on the Kenai River as easy and enjoyable as possible.

What is the weather usually like on the Kenai River?

The weather on the Kenai River can vary widely — sometimes all in the same day. We suggest checking the forecast a few days before your Alaska vacation and planning accordingly.

Always bring rain gear and an extra layer, as conditions can change quickly. A baseball hat or stocking cap is easy to pack and great for regulating body heat while fishing.

What do we do with the fish after they are caught?

We can process your fish and arrange transportation for you. Most guests choose to bring their fish home as a checked piece of luggage. A soft-sided cooler works great for this — and we sell high-quality coolers if you need one.

How much fish can we expect to catch?

Fishing is fishing, and there are never guarantees — but our guests do very well.

  • Sockeye (Red) Salmon Trips: Up to 15 pounds of fillets per person
  • Coho (Silver) Salmon Trips: Typically 7–15 pounds of fillets per person

Our Kenai River fishing guides work hard to put you in the best possible position for success.

What is the restroom situation while fishing?

It depends on where we’re fishing:

  • On the Kenai River, there are many public restrooms available
  • On the Kasilof River, it’s usually a “use the woods” situation

We always let guests know what to expect ahead of time.

What about bears on the Kenai River?

We do occasionally see bears — but it’s rare. When we do, we observe them from a safe distance from the boat. There’s no need to worry; bears are far more interested in fish than people.

Where do your fishing trips depart from?

We follow the fish. Since salmon are highly migratory, your trip may depart from:

  • The Kasilof River
  • One of several boat launches in the Soldotna or Sterling areas

We’ll confirm the exact meeting time and location the day before your trip. Being flexible with meeting times and locations greatly increases fishing success. Salmon runs vary widely by the year and following the instructions on meeting information are crucial for success.

Can we keep our catch?

Yes — all legally retained fish are yours to keep. Kenai river Trout species are typically catch and release by regulation, while guided lake fishing allows for the harvest of up to 5 rainbow trout and arctic char per person.

Do you take beginners and kids?

Yes! We regularly take beginners and children. If kids are young (typically under 11), we may recommend booking a private charter so we can provide extra guidance and ensure a safe, fun, and successful day on the water for your family.

Is the fishing good on the Kenai River right now?

Fishing is almost always good! For the most up-to-date information, check the fish run timing chart on our website or give us a call. We’re happy to help you plan the best time for your Alaska fishing trip.

Where is the best fishing on the Kenai River?

The best salmon fishing is usually on the lower and middle stretches of the Kenai River, downstream from Skilak Lake.

The Kasilof River, just south of the Kenai, is a phenomenal sockeye salmon fishery from June through mid-July.

Is king salmon fishing open on the Kenai River right now?

Not likely, due to low king salmon abundance. However, sockeye and coho salmon fishing remains excellent.

Are silver (coho) salmon running in the Kenai River now?

Silver salmon typically arrive in early August and run through the fall.

Are sockeye salmon running in the Kenai River now?

Sockeye salmon are present from late May through mid-September, with the best fishing occurring in:

  • June
  • July
  • The first half of August

Should I bring my own fishing equipment?

Unless you have highly technique-specific gear, we recommend leaving your equipment at home. We provide quality rods, reels, and lines specifically set up for how we fish.

Most rods from home aren’t the correct length, action, or rigging for Kenai River salmon fishing. Fly anglers are welcome to bring their own rods for trout and coho trips.

Can I camp at the boat landing?

Yes. We launch from multiple boat landings that allow tent or RV camping, which many guests find convenient when booking multi-day Alaska fishing trips.
