The Best Lures for the Kenai River

The Best Kenai River Fishing Lures

The Kenai River is one of the most legendary fishing destinations in Alaska, offering world-class fishing for salmon, trout, and Dolly Varden. Whether you’re an experienced angler or just starting out, having the right lures can make a significant difference in your success. Below, I will break down the best fishing lures for the Kenai river. Make sure you have at least a few of these lures in your box before heading out to the Kenai river.

1. Spinners (Size 4-5 Vibrax, Bright Colors)

Spinners are an excellent choice for targeting aggressive salmon, especially silvers. Size 4-5 Blue Fox Vibrax spinners in bright colors like orange, chartreuse, and pink are highly effective in the glacial waters of the Kenai River. Kodiak custom, a business local to Soldotna also makes a great line of spinners that are effective at catching King, coho and pink salmon. If the water is dirty or you are targeting King salmon make sure you have a few skirted models in your tackle box.

2. Plugs (my favorite kenai river fishing lure)

Plugs are perfect for back-trolling both deep pools and shallow runs where king and coho salmon hold. Their wobbling action is irresistible to kings and silvers. Silver, chartreuse, and flame orange are proven colors for Kenai River salmon fishing. Some proven models of plugs for fishing the kenai river include the Kwikfish (K13-15) Flatfish and Maglip (3.0-5.0) When the river is open to bait we wrap a sardine fillet on the belly of the plug to maximize our chances of getting a bite.

3. Twitching Jigs

Twitching jigs have surged in popularity for silver salmon fishing. Using a 3/8- to 1/2-ounce jig in colors like purple, pink, or black with a lift-and-drop motion can entice aggressive strikes from coho salmon.

4. Wicked Lures

Wicked Lures offer a unique hybrid between a spinner and a bait rig, making them deadly for silvers. Colors like pink, red, and chartreuse work exceptionally well for Kenai River coho fishing. Wicked lures can be cast, backtrolled, or fished from anchor. You can even add a small piece of sardine to the hook if bait is legal.

5. Articulated Streamers

Fly anglers looking to target trophy rainbow trout and Dolly Varden on the kenai river will find articulated streamers highly effective. These flies mimic baitfish and fresh salmon flesh drifting in the river. Black, olive, and white are excellent choices.

6. Beads (6mm-14mm)

For trout fishing, beads are among the most productive presentations. Matching the natural egg size from spawning salmon is crucial, with 6mm to 14mm beads in orange, pink, and peach being the most effective for Kenai River trout fishing.

7. Spin-N-Glo (With and Without Bait)

Spin-N-Glos are versatile lures used for salmon. They can be fished with or without bait (such as salmon eggs) and are highly effective for back-bouncing, backtrolling or drifting in deeper runs. The world record king salmon was caught out of the Kenai river using a spin-n-glo in the 1980s. Hot colors include flame, 50/50, hot pink, orange and

8. Russian River Fly

Cheap and effective, this is a staple for sockeye salmon fishing. Its 3/8″ hook gap makes it legal for all use in all 82 miles of the river, and is a must have for flossing for sockeye salmon if you plan on fishing the upper Kenai river. The flossing technique is a must-know for Kenai River sockeye fishing. If you have never done it before, I strongly recomend hiring a guide who can teach you the ropes.

**10. Plain 2/0-4/0 Hook **

A simple, plain hook is often the most effective setup for catching sockeye salmon as they migrate upstream. Flossing techniques work best in heavy current areas, making it the most efficient method for sockeye fishing. In alaska a plain, undressed hook is clearly defined as a fly in the regulations. There is no need for anything fancy when flossing sockeye. Check out my youtube video HERE on how to set up your rig for sockeye.

Final Thoughts

The best Kenai River lures depend on the species you’re targeting and the time of year. Whether you’re spin fishing, fly fishing, or back-trolling, these lures have been tried and tested to produce results. Be sure to check local regulations and get ready for an unforgettable fishing experience on the Kenai River!
